Rector´s Foreword
Dear readers,In the 21st century we are entering the age of knowledge society where advanced technologies play key roles.
The aim of the University of Žilina is to provide the education required presently and to conduct research to develop new technologies. The university´s excellence is recognized locally, in Europe and worldwide. The services provided are widely appreciated in society.
The University of Žilina can look back proudly on its more than 55-year-old tradition of pre-eminence in scientific and engineering training. Our graduates are engaged worldwide, our professors are internationally recognised. Today with its nearly 13 000 students and seven faculties, our university is one of the largest technical universities in Slovakia. It enjoys local and international visibility.
We offer the students excellent supervisors and optimal conditions for studying not only engineering and natural sciences, but also humanities, economics and business sciences. Present-day technology is no longer simple arts and skills but is based on wide and thorough knowledge of the science. Hence, we require every student to first learn basic science as thoroughly as possible and then to deepen and expand their knowledge of higher-level though bachelor, master and doctoral courses. New access and methods based on research as well as use of information and communication technologies are largely introduced in teaching and learning processes. In this way the University stays at the forefront of innovation and excellence in education. A core objective in shaping the university profile has become internationalisation. We are continuing to develop a network of strategic partners with leading international universities, in co-operation with global partners in industry and commerce. In setting up a European centre of excellence for transportation research and the others structural units for flexible services to stakeholders, the university is not only shaping its own profile but in a short time contributing to development in the north-west country area. Its knowledge and expertise are an asset to society, saving its cultural, economic and social development. With renewed structures reinforced partnerships, the university creates knowledge and passes it on with a spirit of passion, innovation and curiosity.
Žilina enjoys high reputation for its beauty and wealthy history that, all in all, make it an excellent place to be a student.
I invite you all to get to know the University of Žilina through these pages. I would be pleased to be able to greet you personally some day.
Yours sincerely,
Prof. Ján Bujňák
