The city of Žilina offers a wide range of cultural, sports and other leisure activities. Cultural activities include museums, galleries, exhibitions, theatres and cinemas. Also, shopping facilities, restaurants, cafes and pubs are spread throughout the city.

Sporting opportunities include summer and winter sports and different indoor options, such as swimming pool, fitness, sauna and solarium, ice-hockey stadium and gymnasiums, many of which are operated by the University's Institute of Physical Education. The surrounding mountains (within a 10- to 30-kilometer distance) offer all the opportunities for skiing and snowboarding in winter and mountain walking and climbing during the warmer months.
Žilina offers many opportunities for tourists. Interesting locations are: Vrátna Valley (Malá Fatra Mountains- National Park), Súľovské skaly, Rajecké Teplice Spa, Čičmany, Terchová, Jánošíkové diery.
